MEDICAL PROGRAM

MEDICAL AND NURSING VOLUNTEER PROGRAM

GALAPAGOS

Recommended for students who have a background in healthcare, nursing or medicine. Volunteers are placed in public community clinics (Centro de Salud) which provide primary care and emergency services to local communities around the city of Quito

Volunteers will have the opportunity to work in areas such as obstetrics, gynecology, pediatrics, emergency care, geriatrics and physical /occupational therapy, depending on their level of medical expertise and Spanish proficiency. Medical Spanish clases will be provided for the participants in this program

*Please note: The primary task of volunteer students is to shadow local doctors and nurses in their daily activies .

 Requirements for the volunteers:

  • At least 18 years old; both genders are welcome
  • Intermediate conversational Spanish
  • A health care backgroud
  • Length of stay 2 to 12 weeks
  • Work schedule is from Monday to Friday 8:00 am to 12:30 pm

Volunteer tasks:

  • Accompany doctors and nurses on their daily rounds
  • Take medical histories of patients
  • Perform non-evasive procedures such as taking blood pressure, checking weight and height of patients
  • Observe the cleaning of wounds, removal of sutures and drainage of abscesses
  • Assist physical therapists in exercising patients

Note: Placement in local clinics will be determinate according to the availability of your arrival dates. Upon request, placement in an indigenous clinic can be arranged

PHYSICAL AND OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY VOLUNTEER PROGRAM

Recommended for physical and occupational therapy students and licensed professionals. At this project volunteers take part in a community health center assisting the local therapists prepping patients for their therapy and help them with the different daily exercises. Volunteers can work directly with patients depending on their level of medical expertise and Spanish proficiency. Medical Spanish clases will be provided for the participants in this program

Requirements for the volunteers:

  • At least 18 years old; both genders are welcome
  • Intermediate conversational Spanish
  • A health care backgroud
  • Length of stay 2 to 12 weeks
  • Work schedule is from Monday to Friday 8:00 am to 12:30 pm

  • Take medical histories of patients
  • Assist physical therapists in exercising patients
